When you get back from holiday, the first thing your friends ask about is the food, which is why we were the first title in the UK to combine both topics in 1997. Gastro tours offer a unique way to immerse yourself in the culture of a new destination. Often done on foot (we loved Gothenburg’s tour by Matvandringen), they’re a fantastic way to meet local producers and learn all about regional specialities, while securing you a table at the best restaurants. According to Intrepid Travel the biggest change since it started offering gastro tours in 2012 is that the most popular destinations are now further afield: Japan, Sri Lanka and India are the top three, as opposed to European hot spots. We’ve become more aware of the nuances of regional Asian cuisine and are hungry to try it cooked by locals, with authentic ingredients.
