THE GEORGE INN

-

A traditional thatched pub on the southern banks of the River Swere has been the beating heart of Barford St Michael for centuries – long before husband-and-wife team Claire and Valerio stepped in to transform it into a haven for those seeking a bucolic retreat at the edge of the Cotswolds.

And it’s the splendour of the Cotswolds that shines through every element of The George. Italian-born, French-trained and British-inspired, chef Valerio curates a daily menu led by regional produce – think pea and spinach soup with sourdough baked up the road, goats’ cheese crotin with garden beets, and Cotswold Gold chicken with wild mushrooms. Pub favourites the likes of cottage pies, roasts and raspberry crumbles are honest and hearty, plated beautifully on handcrafted crockery.

Enjoy a summer cocktail on the terrace or a glass of chilled white at the Chef’s Table (enclosed by a wall of wine bottles by the dozens) before hitting the hay. The George’s nine rooms channel stylish country flair with all the modern trimmings – rustic furnishings, beamed ceilings and patchwork quilts are complemented by quirky artwork and pastel-toned, freestanding tubs. Nibble on handmade nougat as you plan tomorrow’s adventures – the historic wonders of Oxford are a stone’s throw away, as are the rolling hills and honey-hued villages of the Cotswolds. With the help of your handy, in-room guide to the area, you won’t miss any of the hidden gems. JM. Doubles from £126, including breakfast. 01869 338160, thegeorgebarford.co.uk
