Listed Torquay ‘holiday home’ GWR signalbox is sold at auction
THE disused Grade II listed signalbox on the platform at unstaffed Torre station in Torquay, Devon, has been sold at auction for £65,750.
The GWR Type 7 signal box, built in 1921/22 for the Great Western Railway, might yet be converted into a holiday home following its sale by Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions. The guide price was £54,000.
The design is unusual as it is three storeys rather than the typical two. The top floor is still equipped with all its now non-functioning rows of signal levers and handles, and a signalman’s armchair.
The signal room has a cast iron potbellied coal-fed stove dating from the age of steam, wood panelling and high ceilings, and is flooded with light from the panoramic windows.
Planning permission for conversion of the signalbox into a holiday home had previously been obtained for the property, but has now lapsed.
Sean Roper, of Paul Fosh Auctions, said: “We had a great deal of interest from railway enthusiasts and also from local people for the former signalbox, which attracted a total of 41 bids from five individual bidders at the online auction.
“I’d say the property would be just perfect for the avid trainspotter, or perhaps a holiday home owner who wants to be able to go on a weekend away and simply step from the train and be at home.
“The signalbox is within walking distance of Torquay’s beach and attractions. It really is a wonderful opportunity for those who prefer something a little bit different.”
The two-platform station, managed by Great Western Railway, is 219 miles from Paddington.
