Order placed for Clan Hengist front bogie tyres
PROGRESS on the building of new BR Clan Pacific No. 72010 Hengist at CTL Seal’s factory in Sheffield has continued during lockdown, with orders placed for key components.
The front bogie wheel tyres and axles have been ordered by the project’s contractor for the wheelsets – South Devon Railway Engineering – from the South African heavy engineering firm Nalendi Ringrollers, a world leader in the field.
The Standard Steam Locomotive Company Limited’s project team launched an appeal in December 2020 to raise £22,000 in order to complete the final phase of work on the front bogie. The appeal will cover the construction of the suspension system, and includes the spring cradle plates, spring brackets, leaf springs and completion of the remaining axle. As we closed for press, more than half of the target amount has now been raised.
Project engineering director Geoff Turner said: “Following a very useful meeting with South Devon Railway Engineering last year, their expert advice gave us confidence in Nalendi Ringrollers as a supplier.
“Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19, we made great progress building Hengist last year and we’re looking to continue this in 2021.”
