The last 9F in edible form!

-

READER Bryan Tanner was not wrong when he said: “What some people will do to get a piece of their favourite engine…!”

He was referring to a cake depicting the last steam locomotive to be constructed by British Railways – 9F 2-10-0 No. 92220 Evening Star.

“Evening Star is one of my favourite locomotives, having seen it many times in the National Railway Museum (NRM) in York,” continued Bryan.

“To this end, last year my fiancée and I had scheduled a visit to take her grandson, Kai, to the NRM as he, at four years old, is mad on trains, both riding and looking at them.

“Needless to say, Covid-19 happened and a short local trip from Middlesbrough to Redcar for a day out at the seaside by train was all that we could be arranged during the pandemic.

“While Kai was thrilled and loved it, I felt somewhat cheated that the real event was put on hold. To supplement this trip I arranged with his parents’ permission to purchase a cake made especially for his fifth birthday. Needless to say, the first engine I thought of was Evening Star.

“I am lucky to have a friend who has her own cake making business – Corrine Winwood, who runs Cozzmic Cakes in Hartlepool – and she was more than happy to accommodate my wishes.

“When you look at the pictures of the cake you will hopefully appreciate the attention to detail that was involved in making it, and this involved, so I was told, finding blueprint designs of the Evening Star on the internet.

“With the exception of the level crossing gates, everything on the cake board is edible. In my opinion, Corrine has captured the beauty and feel of this enigmatic locomotive.”

Corrine’s skills and attention to detail have not gone unnoticed by other sections of the media. Her work appeared in the Daily Mirror when she baked a wedding cake, and she has also been the subject of a three-page feature in a bridal magazine.
