■ K1 No. 62005 steams back to Grosmont after throatplate repair

-

THE North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group’s (NELPG) K1 2-6-0 No. 62005 departed Carnforth for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on February 1.

Having completed its West Coast Railways ‘Jacobite’ duties last summer, the K1 returned to Carnforth to have its tyres turned before heading to its base at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). Prior to the move, it was ‘stopped’ when a crack in the throatplate was discovered, as previously reported.

With repair now effected, No. 62005 and support coach travelled to Grosmont via the National Railway Museum in York and Battersby.

Housed in NELPG’s Deviation shed at Grosmont, No. 62005 is now undergoing winter maintenance, prior to being available to work NYMR’s Whitby trains during its stay, circumstances permitting.

It is expected to return to Fort William in time to take its place in the 2021 ‘Jacobite’roster.

The K1 will be withdrawn in October and have its boiler lifted as part of its seven-year heavy overhaul, which is expected to be completed in early 2023.
