Hawksworth County project is on the home straight

-

FUNDRAISING for the Great Western Society’s new GWR 4-6-0 No. 1014 County of Glamorgan has now passed £1 million.

The project team estimates that it now needs just £150,000 to complete the locomotive, which is being built at Didcot Railway Centre.

Activity at Didcot has been held up by the pandemic but elsewhere progress has continued to be made with the major components, connecting rods, coupling rods, extension rods, slidebars, crossheads, pistons and, of course, the kit of parts for the tender tank.

Services at Huyton near Liverpool, steady progress has been made with the boiler and completion is now expected in early 2022.

Major items yet to be sourced are the superheater header and some backhead fittings.

Project spokesman David Bradshaw said: “When the project was launched in 2005, we had no clear idea as to how much it would cost but over the years as progress was made, our supporters have managed to keep us ahead of the game.”
