Locomotive withdrawn 94 years ago in the Vectis spotlight

PRESERVED North Eastern Railway Class 1463/LNER E5 No. 1463 was in the spotlight in the Vectis monthly live online model train sale on March 26, when a 3½in gauge live steam version of the 2-4-0 achieved the highest realisatio­n of £1600. The full-size loco was built at Darlington in 1885, withdrawn in 1927, and is now part of the National Collection.

Behind this veteran loco came a Wrenn OO-gauge LMS streamline­d Princess Coronation No. 6237 City of Bristol (£950); an early carpet railway 3¼in gauge live steam 2-2-2 of unknown make (£700); a collection of 32 OO-gauge coach and wagon kits made by various model manufactur­ers (£580); and at £520, a Bing of Germany O-gauge Midland Railway 4-2-2 No. 650. Prices exclude buyer’s premium of 25% (inc VAT).

*A BR poster by Jack Merriott (1901-68) of Loch Etive in Scotland’s western highlands near Oban sold for £950 (exc buyer’s premium of 24% + VAT) in a live online and telephone auction held by McTear’s of Glasgow on April 7. It was one of six posters in a collection owned by a Scottish enthusiast.
