Onslows arrives at coastal destinations with top estimates

-

RAILWAY posters promoting seaside resorts in East Sussex and Norfolk have been given some of the highest estimates in Onslows’ vintage travel posters auctions being held on May 28. They are led by a Southern Railway 1947 issue for Hastings titled ‘Follow their lead’ by Charles ‘Chas’ Pears (1873-1958), which features two young ladies with a large dog and is estimated to go under the hammer for up to £3500.

From the BR era comes another Hastings poster that includes its neighbour St Leonards. It was painted by F W Wentworth-Sheilds (1869-1959), an artist who was also a book illustrator, and has a top estimate of £2500. A similar estimate has been put on an LNER poster by J L Carstairs issued in 1927 promoting Hunstanton in Norfolk.

Other artists whose posters for the LMS, LNER, GWR and BR also have four-figure estimates include respectively Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971), Fred Taylor (18751963), Gyrth Russell (1892-1970), and Frederick Baldwin (1899-1984). The auction is live online and starts at 2pm.
