Singapore recalls its time as a POW
HAWTHORN Leslie 0-4-0ST No. 3865 of 1936 Singapore was the centrepiece of a special open day on August 29 at Rocks by Rail: The Living Ironstone Museum to mark the liberation of Far Eastern prisoners of war at the end of the Second World War.
The locomotive and 80,000 Allied servicemen were captured at the fall of Singapore in February 1942.
The 76th anniversary commemoration included a display giving insight into the lives of POWs, and visitors had the opportunity to place a white orchid – the Far East conflict flower of remembrance – on the locomotive.
Formerly known as Rutland Railway Museum, the Cottesmore venue will be holding a Driver for a Fiver day on Sunday, October 3.
