New Corris Falcon will steam in September if funds permit

-

FOLLOWING the restarting of work on the new-build Falcon 0-4-2ST No. 10 for the Corris Railway at Alan Keef Ltd, sections of the footplate have were made and fitted in April prior to the mounting of the smokebox.

The handbrake screw had been machined and connected to the rest of the mechanism to complete that part of the brake assembly.

A decision had been made on the type of air brake cylinder that will be used so that suitable mountings could be made.

With No. 10’s inside motion, and overall small size, accurate measuring of components and clearances is crucial. Accordingly, a volunteer has constructed a wooden ashpan for trial fitting before he commits to producing one in steel that will be fitted to the engine. Another volunteer has made the firebox doors and opening mechanism.

The new locomotive will differ from the originals in that it will have a higher cab to accommodate drivers and firemen who are taller than their Victorian predecessors.

Subject to continued fundraising, it is aimed to have the locomotive in steam on September 24 as the centrepiece of a charity open day at the workshops of Alan Keef Ltd, in Ross-on-Wye, with it entering Corris service in early 2023.

➜ Donations for the new engine in order to meet this timescale may be made online at www. corris.co.uk or cheques, payable to Corris Railway, can be sent to: Peter Guest, 38 Underwood Close, Callow Hill, Redditch B97 5YS.
