Steeple Grange railway is running again after rockfall and flooding

-

THE Steeple Grange Light Railway has reopened for public passenger services after being shut for two years.

The 18in gauge line near Wirksworth closed in 2020 because of the pandemic but then suffered a rockfall that September, followed by a major flood a few months later when a highpressure water main on a bridge burst and damaged the trackbed.

However, an all-out effort by volunteers – supported by professional contractors who secured the rockface at a cost of £40,000 – have seen it returned to operating condition.

The line, which occupied part of the trackbed of the Killer’s branch line from Steeple House Junction of the Cromford & High Peak Railway to Middleton Quarry, ran over Easter weekend and now aims to run services every Sunday and bank holiday over the summer.

?? SGLR ?? The line’s main motive power for passenger services, 4wDM No.3 Greenbat, is back in action.
