N1 worksplate heads the line-up at Thirsk

A 1908 Great Northern Railway Doncaster worksplate (works No. 1184) from N1 class No. 69439 went under the hammer for £1000 at a Thirsk Railwayana sale on April 9. The 0-6-2T was numbered 1559 by the GNR on entering traffic in January 1908 and 4559 by the LNER, and was withdrawn from Bradford Hammerton Street (37C) in November 1955.

Following at £540 was a BR(S) Welling station totem sign, and at £520 came a BR Harrogate poster. It was the work of Sheffield-born Kenneth Steel (1906-70), who in 1935 became the youngest elected member of the prestigiou­s Royal Society of British Artists and subsequent­ly produced a number of posters for British Railways. Prices exclude buyer’s premium of 12% (+ VAT).

■ A selection of prewar US-made O-gauge tinplate coaches that carried an estimate of up to £40 sold for £950 at a Vectis model train sale on March 30. The lot comprised three LNWR Pullman coaches and a GNR coach, and also included a GNR mail van and a tender carrying the No. 120. The price excludes buyer’s premium of 25% (inc VAT).
