LAST YEAR WAS HARD ON MY LIVER. HOW CAN I SHOW IT SOME LOVE?

- Chris, Cornwall

Today 8.11am

I’ve already been cutting back on booze. And I’m going to stick with it this time, too. I think.

It’s never too late to take action!

The good news is that the early stages of alcohol-related liver disease can be reversed by reducing your drinking to safer levels.

Define ‘safer’. Can I still sink a few pints on a Friday?

Well, no amount of alcohol is completely without risk, but if you can stick to 14 units per week, with two or three days off, you can reduce the damage.

I’m trying, doc. What about my gym routine? Can I squat my way to a healthier liver?

Carrying extra weight increases the risk of fat being stored in the liver, a cause of liver cancer. Both aerobic and resistance exercise reduce your risk, so do what works for you.

Any superfoods I should throw in my shopping basket?

Green vegetables such as broccoli contain compounds that reduce liver fat. More excitingly, perhaps, two or three cups of coffee a day do the same thing.

A double espresso and a spot of power lifting? Works for me . I just hope I haven’t left it too late…

Your liver has a remarkable capacity to recover from injury. You have to give it a chance.
