STROLL THE LANCASHIRE CHEESE TRAILS
Lancashire has three official cheese trails: Crumbly, Creamy and Tasty. The latter pays homage to the region’s aged cheeses and focuses on Beacon Fell traditional Lancashire cheese, a PDO (protected designation of origin) product. This route explores the county’s cheesemaking heritage, circling the ‘milk fields’ that have dominated the landscape since the 19th century. It skims past small fields — separated by hedgerows — whose grass is credited with giving the cheese its buttery texture, nuttiness and acidic tang. Naturally, there are stops where you can taste the cheese, too.
GETTING STARTED: The six-mile loop begins and ends in the village of Inglewhite at The Green Man at Inglewhite pub (thegreenmanatinglewhite.co.uk), which serves regional cheeses. DON’T MISS: Sample raw cow’s milk cheeses at Mrs Kirkham’s Farm Shop (mrskirkhamscheese.co.uk) and ask for a tour of the dairy.
