Two new Walsall-Wolverhampton stations planned to open in 2024
An opening date of 2024 (a year later than planned) has been announced for two new stations when the Walsall-Wolverhampton freight route regains its passenger service.
Willenhall will be the first to be commissioned in the early part of the year, with Darlaston to follow a few months later. Their joint cost is £54 million, and the scheme is the brainchild of the West Midlands Combined Authority.
Willenhall, which closed in 1965, has been rebuilt in a different location and has been problematic because old mine shafts had to be secured before construction could start.
Completion of the new Darlaston station depends (like Willenhall) upon the compulsory purchase of nearby land.
