GCR bridge demolished
A 125-year-old bridge spanning the A60 at Loughborough was demolished on October 1, to make way for a new deck. Built by the Great Central Railway, the original structure was in poor condition and had been struck many times by lorry drivers, rendering it beyond economic repair.
The new two-track span forms part of the GCR’s Reunification project to reconnect the two halves of line (separated by British Rail in the 1970s), to create an 18-mile heritage operation.
Replacing the A60 bridge will cost more than £1 million, which is being raised through a fundraising appeal. Donations can be made online at: gcrrailway.co.uk/unify.
