Objections likely to Network Rail’s Liverpool Street development plan
Historic England says it is “deeply concerned” over proposals to redevelop London Liverpool Street station.
Network Rail and its development partner Sellar have shared plans to improve access and circulation throughout the terminus, while also embarking on oversite commercial developments - including a refurbishment of the neighbouring Great Eastern Hotel.
HE says that given the listed buildings’ location in the heart of London, it “would make a very strong objection if such a scheme were taken forward”.
It argues that the redevelopment would “have a severe impact” on the Bishopsgate Conservation Area and that a new 16-storey tower block is “so large that it is likely to encroach on views of some of London’s great landmarks”, including St Paul’s Cathedral.
“While we recognise the need for upgrades to the site, so that it can better serve the millions of people that pass through its doors, this oversized and insensitive development is surely not the answer,” added HE CEO Duncan Wilson.
The next stage for the project will be to submit a formal planning application to the City of London, should NR decide to proceed with the plans.
