Station renamed as Dunfermline City
ScotRail commemorated a visit by King Charles III to Fife on October 3 by announcing that Dunfermline Town would henceforth be known as Dunfermline City - although it will take some time for signage, ticketing and national databases to catch up.
Dunfermline City station, situated on the inland EdinburghDundee route, was opened as Dunfermline Lower in November 1877.
The name was shortened to Dunfermline by British Rail in
October 1968, after the closure of the nearby Dunfermline Upper (which is now a car park).
It is not to be confused with another station, Dunfermline Queen Margaret, which is situated north of the city. It opened in January 2000 and is named after the local hospital.
Historians would contend that Dunfermline has been a city before, as the burial place of seven Scottish kings. It formally regained this status as part of this year’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
