Petts Wood footbridge brings commuter suburb together

- DAVID STAINES.

On October 11, work progresses on a £10.8 million scheme to make Petts Wood station fully accessible.

The creation of a new footbridge with lifts to link the station’s two island platforms will also rectify a historical mistake. That’s because when opened on a greenfield site in 1928, the station was soon surrounded by new housing developments, and the railway had the effect of splitting the new commuter suburb in two, with the existing station footbridge still incorporating the principal pedestrian right of way between the two halves.

The project is being funded by the Department for Transport’s Access for All fund and should be completed by autumn 2023.
