Stewart is new Select Committee chair

Iain Stewart has been elected Chair of the House of Commons Transport Select Committee (TSC).

The vacancy arose when previous Chair Huw Merriman was appointed Rail Minister on October 27. He had been on the TSC since 2015.

Stewart, Conservative MP for Milton Keynes South, won in a contest against four other candidates.

“I want the Committee to scrutinise and hold to account Government, agencies and operators, but also to do important horizon-scanning proactive work into future opportunities and challenges,” said Stewart.

Runner-up was Katherine Fletcher, who spent 37 days as a Transport Minister in Liz Truss’ short-lived government.

The other candidates were Jack Brereton, Jackie Doyle-Price, and Karl McCartney.
