The King’s Own Scottish Borderer emerges from Peascliff Tunnel on June 6, 1979.

-

I enjoyed photographing trains bursting out of tunnels at speed, particularly Stoke and Peascliff

Tunnels, never knowing what would appear, long before modern technology was being used, which I feel has now taken much of the thrill out of our hobby.

On a lovely afternoon of June 6, 1979, 55010 The King’s Own Scottish Borderer has burst out of Peascliff Tunnel into the sunshine with the 15.50 York to London King’s Cross, before slowing for its stop at Grantham about two miles away. I don’t recall ever returning to this splendid location, which I fear has probably been lost to the almost unchecked growth of lineside vegetation.

From March 1978, the first Deltic diagrams had been handed over to the HSTS.

From early 1980, the Deltics were to be progressively withdrawn.
