case of one in and one out at Shackerstone, with 47640 University of Strathclyde departing the railway and (as reported on page 25) 40118 arriving on The Battlefield Line.

Withdrawn by English Welsh and Scottish Railways in 2000, 47640 first arrived at Shackerstone in faded parcels red and grey colours before being repainted into BR blue, regaining its previous 47244 identity, and the locomotive quickly became a regular member of Battlefield’s operational diesel fleet. It was later repainted into large logo livery as 47640, which it still carries.

The locomotive had previously been a popular member of the diesel fleet at The Battlefield Line but is currently unserviceable and has now been moved to the

Nemesis site at Burton upon Trent, where the locomotive’s owner works. Prior to this, the University of Strathclyde nameplates were removed from the locomotive. Meanwhile, Shackerstone-based Heritage Transport Restoration and Supplies continues work on the revival of Harry Needle Railroad Company’s 20087, as a return to service for the Class 20 edges ever closer.

On December 21 the locomotive was successfully operated on test runs around the yard at Shackerstone, following rectification of various brake and electrical faults. Further test runs of 20087 took place on January 11, this time running down The Battlefield Line’s operational line, with resident 33201 and Class 20 D8110 in tow.

?? Steve Donald ?? Having spent almost two decades on The Battlefield Line, large logo-liveried 47640 has left Shackerstone for storage at Nemesis Rail. The locomotive and low loader carrying it rests overnight in the abnormal load bay at Junction 24 on the M1 on January 11, 2022, before continuing its journey to Burton the following day.
