37402 Stephen Middlemore disturbs the wildlife at Ravenglass, hauling the 14.37 Barrow to Carlisle service on November

28, 2016.

With the setting sun moving from left to right rapidly, it was a hard composition to execute. I was hoping for the best starburst possible for the setting sun between the pillars of the viaduct, so selected a F22 aperture to achieve the required result.

Everything and more came together for me with this shot. It’s the only photo I’ve had printed onto a canvas and displayed at home.

Out of all the locations along the Cumbria coast, I enjoyed visiting Ravenglass the most. Not many stations still have their own platform pub (The Ratty Arms), complete with an open log fire in the winter, selling great food and guest ales.

It was always a great place to refuel and warm up while waiting for the last locomotive-hauled train to take me back to Carlisle.
