Disruption to busy Manchester to Bolton route after vandal attack
A Northern Class 331 EMU and overhead electric wires were damaged when vandals threw a log into the path of a Blackpool North to Hazel Grove service on the Manchester side of Farnworth Tunnel, near Bolton, on March 14.
The train, being worked by Caf-built 331022, was carrying more than 100 passengers. Thankfully, no one was injured and all passengers were safely evacuated from the train. A window on the train was smashed and Northern reported that a brief fire broke out.
Due to the damage suffered to the overhead electrification, there was widespread disruption to services which would usually use the Bolton to Manchester Victoria line throughout the evening of March 14 and the following morning, until repairs were completed by Network Rail engineers.
Northern regional director Chris Jackson said: “This was totally reckless behaviour by mindless individuals who gave no thought for the safety of other people.
“The consequences of a log hitting a fast-moving train are potentially devastating.
“I urge anyone with information as to the identities of those responsible to contact the British Transport Police.”
Network Rail North West route director Phil James added: “I am disgusted by this dangerous and reckless act of vandalism.
“The people responsible put the safety of our passengers and colleagues at risk.
“They have caused thousands of pounds of damage to the railway infrastructure and significantly disrupted services travelling between Manchester and Bolton.
“We are working closely with the British Transport Police to catch the culprits.”
