CHOCOLATE FANCIES

- Tested by Richard Corrigan, chef patron of Corrigan Collection

The joy of unwrapping an Easter treat is the element of surprise. You want a bit of fun, as well as something delicious to scoff. corrigansmayfair.co.uk

1. Hotel Chocolat Pen Pals, £10 for 120g

A nicely designed trio. The milk and white are creamy and sweet, but I’m drawn to the darkchocolate bunny, which has a good-quality cocoa flavour. There’s something for everyone.

2. Harvey Nichols Lick the Spoon Milk Chocolate Easter Chick, £7.95 for 90g

An endearing design with mini foiled eggs. The chocolate itself is dark; they haven’t gone over the top with creaminess and have kept it on the right side of sugary.

A gift for a child to give to an adult, perhaps.

3. Daylesford Chocolate Praline Farmyard, £9.99 for 104g

A quaint collection in a cute basket with straw, however, the solid shapes are excrutiatingly sweet. The nuttiness is subtle, but they’re good to nibble on.

4. Morrisons Sparky the Dragon,

£4 for 200g

Just a simple milkchocolate shell. It seems a substantial amount to eat, but is a bit bland.

5. Aldi Specially Selected Exquisite Hot Air Balloon Easter Egg, £12.99 for 320g

I love the spirit of adventure here, the Jules Verne vibe. The chocolate has a great snap, and I’d happily sit and munch on this all day. Children should love it, although it’s large enough for the whole family to feast on it.

Asda White Chocolate Lucy the Lamb, £4 for 200g

I have a fondness for sheep and the moulded shape is a good effort, but the white chocolate doesn’t have any flavour. It’s just sugar.

7. Marks & Spencer Burrowing Bunny, £15 for 320g

A jolly Easter idea with a sense of humour, and the thick chocolate shell gives a satisfying crack. It’s a bit too milky for me, but lots of fun.

8. Artisan du Chocolat Flamingo, £25 for 410g

I love the mini eggs hidden under the wing, and I want to be a fan of this because the design is so clever, but it’s sickly. A shame, because the thickness and snap had put it in a strong position.

9. Demarquette Milk Chocolate Clown Fish, £15 for approx 90g

A huge effort has gone into the look of this and the chocolate is wonderfully thick, but there’s no lasting flavour. It’s too creamy.

10. Tesco Rainbow the Unicorn, £3.50 for 200g

I am not keen on the colour – it’s quite a scary pink!the smell is slightly artifical and it tastes it, too. I imagine the whole thing will appeal to children.

11. Rococo Chocolates Roald Dahl The Enormous Crocodile Egg, £19.95 for 150g

I love the simplicity of the foiled halves (you can eat a bit, then squirrel away the rest) and the crocodile shapes inside. Sadly, there’s no lingering cocoa flavour.
