Delia slams ‘cold-hearted’ refugee policy

-

DELIA SMITH yesterday accused the government of ‘slamming the door’ in the face of Ukrainian refugees and called for ‘dreadful’ visa requirements to be scrapped.

As pressure continued to mount on Home Secretary Priti Patel, the 80-year-old celebrity chef condemned the ‘unforgivable’ situation facing refugees as they seek sanctuary in Britain.

Asked about the visa rules on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Ms Smith said: ‘I think we should just get rid of them. Gosh, these people! I mean, it’s unforgivable. We are coldly slamming the door in their face, we are being so cold-hearted and that is not how Britain truly is.

‘All of us should try whatever we can to persuade the Government to scrap visas in this very serious case.’

The cook, the majority owner of Norwich City FC, said she had joined her team’s fans by booing Roman Abramovich when Chelsea supporters chanted their oligarch owner’s name at Carrow Road on Thursday.

‘I was with our crowd and we were all booing at the top of our heads, including me, when they mentioned him,’ she said. ‘They had a lovely little song, the Norwich supporters, called “Where’s your dirty money gone?” It has been going for nearly 20 years and it has taken a war for it to really come up to the surface.’
