Rebuilding Notre Dame: The Next Chapter

The fire that broke out in Notre-Dame in 2019 shocked the world and, for a time, left us wondering if the Paris cathedral would be lost altogether, but now the monumental medieval building is well on its way to being restored.

As historian Lucy Worsley (right) discovers on her visit to find out the latest about the massive building project, the race is on for the work to be completed in time for the 2024 Olympics in the city.

The scale of the challenge is vast, but there’s fervent enthusiasm from the experts and craftsmen she meets.

Worsley is afforded a privileged glimpse of the masonry work and stained-glass windows, while further afield the search is on for oak trees that will match the original wood of the structure, which took almost a century to build from 1163.
