As an orthodox Christian country, Russia doesn’t celebrate Christmas Day until January 7, in accordance with the Julian calendar. Religious celebrations were actually banned under the Soviet regime, and to this day New Year remains the bigger of the two celebrations. St Petersburg’s biggest tree stands outside the Winter Palace, once the official residence of the country’s monarchs.
