Hartlepool
Many of us know about the Napoleonic Wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and the vital role the Royal Navy played. When you visit the city’s Royal Naval Museum, you’ll learn so much more.
The focus is restored warship HMS
Trincomalee, which is berthed at Hartlepool Historic Quay, where a major award-winning restoration and interpretation of the ship was completed in the early summer of 2001.
An authentic reconstruction of an
18th-century seaport takes you back in time.
“The site is truly unique and visitors often come to witness our live cannon and musket displays, ropemaking and object-handling sessions in our Georgian quayside shops,” museum general manager Roslyn Adamson says.
“Not to mention the unique experience of boarding one of the oldest warships still afloat. In an effort to add authenticity to the attraction, staff and volunteers dress in period costume.”
The Hartlepool Maritime Experience attracts around 50,000 visitors every year, and those who arrive by
sea can make use of the marina, which can hold up to 500 boats.
“We have exciting plans to expand the museum and its story, sharing a much
broader timeline of events in the Royal Navy’s history and emphasise Hartlepool’s strong maritime heritage.”
