● A fifteen-year-old Walter Scott met bard Robert Burns at a literary soirée in 1786. It’s thought to be the pair’s only encounter, and while they didn’t speak much, Burns is said to have been impressed by the teenager’s knowledge of poetry.
● The word glamour was introduced into English literature by Sir Walter Scott. He used it to describe a magic spell or sense of enchantment that enabled people to see objects and surroundings in a more flattering way.
● In 1818, Sir Walter Scott rediscovered Scotland’s crown jewels: a crown, sceptre and sword of state that had been hidden away in Edinburgh Castle for 111 years. As a reward, Scott was granted the title of baronet.
