A Literary Tour
Join Lorna Cowan as she travels around Yorkshire, discovering the places that inspired the Brontë sisters.
JANE EYRE”, “Wuthering Heights”, “Agnes Grey”, “The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall”. Whether you have been transported to Yorkshire while reading a novel by one of the Brontë sisters, or transfixed by landscapes and grand homes when watching a screen adaptation, there’s no denying that the writings of Charlotte, Emily and Anne were inspired by their home town of Haworth and the surrounding area.
The girls grew up in the early 19th century, and their father was a parson at the local church.
As their mother died aged only thirty-eight, the sisters often found themselves alone at home with their brother Branwell.
Making up stories for one another was an entertaining way to pass the time, and they soon started to write down notes about characters and settings.
On bracing walks across the nearby moors, or while on visits to friends, the three sisters let their imagination run wild.
Many of the places they loved feature one way or another on the pages of a Brontë book.
Here we follow in the writers’ footsteps on a Yorkshire-based literary tour.
