Norton Conyers, Ripon

-

If you’re familiar with “Jane Eyre” and love Charlotte’s descriptions of the magnificent Thornfield Hall, then don’t miss a visit to Norton Conyers, a mediaeval manor house said to be the inspiration for Edward Rochester’s residence.

In 1839, the twentythree-year-old visited the regal dwelling and was fascinated by the family living there.

They shared fanciful tales, including one about a mad woman who found herself locked in an attic. Did this prompt Charlotte to create Bertha Mason, Mr Rochester’s troubled first wife?

Norton Conyers is around an hour’s drive from Haworth. Guided tours are available on certain dates throughout the year. The garden is open on Mondays and Thursdays.
