Over the years, hairdresse­rs such as Vidal Sassoon, Raymond Bessone, Nicky Clarke and John Frieda have become household names, known for their celebrity clients and fancy salons. But the very first famous hairdresse­r was the fabulously named Monsieur Champagne, way back in the 17th century. Mr C expertly styled the hair of high-society women, and was so revered that it’s said the French created the word coiffeur, meaning hairdresse­r, especially for him.
