Over the years, hairdressers such as Vidal Sassoon, Raymond Bessone, Nicky Clarke and John Frieda have become household names, known for their celebrity clients and fancy salons. But the very first famous hairdresser was the fabulously named Monsieur Champagne, way back in the 17th century. Mr C expertly styled the hair of high-society women, and was so revered that it’s said the French created the word coiffeur, meaning hairdresser, especially for him.
