Rags To Ringlets

-

Hands up who used to go to bed with a head full of rags to wake the next morning with Shirley Temple curls (and a crick in your neck)?

The hunt for perfect waves has involved many innovative tricks throughout history, though the less said about our crimping phase the better.

Hairdresser Marcel Grateau revolutionised the curling iron when he used one to create the Marcel wave in the 1870s, but he wasn’t the first to use heated tongs – the ancient Egyptians had already designed a nifty bronze gadget that could be warmed in the fire then used to curl wigs.

We have them to thank for rollers, too. Theirs were wooden and harnessed the heat of the sun to create curls – a technique that might fall a little flat in our unpredictable climate.
