Catherine’s Places

-

• A lot of Catherine’s books have been filmed in the village of Blanchland. The exterior of the cottages, the old abbey which is now the parish church, and the schoolhouse have changed little in 800 years and make the perfect filming location.

• South Shields

Museum recreates Catherine’s childhood street in Jarrow in its Tales of South Tyneside Gallery.

“We display a selection of Dame Catherine Cookson’s personal effects, including the Dictaphone she used when writing many of her novels, and two plaits of her hair!” Adam Bell, Assistant Keeper of Social History for Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, told us.

“Catherine Cookson is one of the most famous of South Tyneside’s sons and daughters, so we’re proud to tell her story in her home-town museum.”

• The Corbridge town sign states it was “The scene of stormy events in the past”. It didn’t mean Catherine, but rather the slaying of Ethelred, King of Northumbria, in 796, and other battles.
