Kangaroo Island

-

Kangaroo is the third-largest island off the coast of Australia, measuring 90 miles long by 19 miles wide.

There were aboriginal settlements here around 16,000 years ago.

The island’s name is thought to have come from the aboriginal word “gangurru” which meant “kangaroo”.

Some of the oldest animal fossils on earth have been found on Kangaroo Island.

Sadly, just after our visit we watched on the news as terrible bush fires ripped through the island, and we wept at the sight of those koalas with burning fur trying to escape the flames.

Luckily some were able to be saved and sent to other sanctuaries in Australia to recover and have now been returned to Kangaroo Island, although it will take a while before things are completely back to how they were.
