Common gull

-

Also called the mew gull, the common gull is certainly far from common. In the past it had many nicknames, including sea mew, sea cobb, small maw and green-billed gull. It’s small and attractive and has a particular liking for worms, which means it is often found on close-cropped turf or in parks with cut grass.

It nests in colonies near water, often on moorland and in boggy areas. Its gregarious nature during the breeding season once made it an easy target for those who liked to add gulls’ eggs to their menu.

Common gulls are sometimes confused with the smallest member of the family, the kittiwake, though they are very different in their habits.
