Cracks found on Patriot’s six driving wheels

-

THE LMS-Patriot Project’s new-build loco No. 5551 The Unknown Warrior has suffered a setback with the discovery of cracks in all six driving wheels.

Following the discovery of defects in one driving wheel when remedial repairs were being undertaken, it was decided to test them all.

After shotblasting, the inspection was undertaken by British Engineering Services

(BES) using magnetic particle testing at Riley & Sons in Heywood.

Three members of the LMSPatriot Project Team attended the premises of Riley & Son (E) Ltd in Heywood to witness the inspection, joined by a senior director from the Boro Foundry which cast the driving wheels in 2010/11.

A report received from BES has confirmed that all five driving wheels tested in June have widespread serious cracking.

After discussions with the loco’s certification body, Ricardo, and the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust – which is assembling No. 5551 at its West Shed works at Butterley, it has been determined that all six driving wheels will need to be replaced. An investigation is continuing.

The way forward with new driving wheels was due to be determined at the project’s board meeting in late July.

There is better news on the boiler – the majority of riveting on the firebox has now been completed by Heritage Boiler Steam Services. About 1500 rivets have been fitted so far.

Transverse stay fitting will be carried out next, followed by the crown stays, while palm stay fitting will come later in the boiler plan.

Meanwhile, the planned construction of a Fowler 2-6-4T following the completion of No. 5551 has been formally dropped.
