CORNWALL TRANSITION FROM STEAM
THE expanding series of books from The Transport Treasury is proving to be very well received, and this latest is definite proof of its success.
Cornwall Transition from Steam, compiled by Jeremy Clements, draws on the extensive photographic collection of the late R C Riley. Richard ‘Dick’ Riley was one of our most prolific photographers, whose prints are well known and held in the highest regard. This selection, the vast majority of which are previously unpublished, certainly lives up to this reputation and is wide ranging including both locomotives and significant railway structures including some of the impressive viaducts found in Cornwall.
To this reviewer, one of the strengths of the book is the extensive and professionally researched captions that accompany each of the photographs, including much about the rolling stock, an aspect often overlooked.
Whilst the majority of the photographs are of steam locomotives, diesels make an appearance and it is good to see the early examples, now long withdrawn, including the North British D63xx Type 2s and ‘Warships’ in their original green livery without yellow warning panels. AB
