Bridge Infills
I WRITE regarding the Cumbrian bridge infill article in July’s edition. I was appalled by the photograph showing the infilled bridge. This was completely unnecessary and insensitive, destroying the aesthetic appearance of the bridge. It is difficult to believe that Highways England could do this without requiring planning permission, but it does highlight the need for greater public awareness of their powers – and the
fact that another 69 structures are to be “infilled”.
Consultations with local communities and other interested parties should always take place before removal or infilling unless urgent measures are needed for safety reasons. Even then, bridges can be temporarily closed while permanent solutions are sought.
I hope Eden District Council will require Highways England to remove the infill and repair the bridge.

■ Following our article, Eden District Council has now said that Highways England must apply for retrospective planning permission, which, if not granted, will mean the infilling has to be removed – Ed.
