Ex-GWR panniers

FURTHER to the article on the end of BR steam in the August issue, I note that the author claims that former GWR 0-6-0PT No. 7754 was “definitely dumped out of use and parked at the back of the shed behind other engines” in February 1975.

I visited the Mountain Ash loco shed on the evening of April 26, 1975 (a Saturday) and found No. 7754 in front of the shed with steam clearly coming from beneath the water tank. We did not see it working, but the presence of steam very strongly suggests it had been operating that day. It would seem that the damaged cylinder cover mentioned in the article had been repaired.
