Surbiton station to receive £6.7m capacity upgrade

NETWORK Rail has announced Surbiton station is set for a £6.7m upgrade, which will improve passenger journeys. Work has already commenced on the southern side.

The busy Surrey commuter station, with its modernist entrances that was used by nearly 9.5m passengers in 2019/20, will get new staircases, a footbridge extension, and ticket gates for platforms 3 and 4 will be installed. The project is designed to speed up entry and exit from the eighth busiest station on the Wessex route, as at present passengers are having to queue on a single set of stairs which can prevent trains to

Guildford, Hampton Court and Woking from leaving on time.

Engineers will remove part of the station building on platforms three and four, along with the southern staircase to the public footbridge, but access to the footbridge will be retained for passengers and some local redirection will be necessary during the works.

Because of the station’s Grade II Listed status, Network Rail architects have worked in collaboration with The Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames, Historic England,

The Railway Heritage Trust, The Design Council and The Twentieth Century Society.
