DBC Class 66 on display
DB Cargo Class 66, No. 66004, which was unveiled in July in light green livery with ‘I’m a Climate Hero’ branding, was put on display at Glasgow Central station in support of Scottish Climate Week. It is estimated that Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), which is used to fuel the locomotive, can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%. The Class 66 was parked at platform 11 on September 15, to highlight the contribution rail freight is already making towards the Scottish Government’s commitments to achieving a net zero carbon economy by 2045. One of the most ambitious net zero targets in the world, the deadline is five years earlier than that set for the rest of the UK. Welcoming the visit of the locomotive, Scottish Transport Minister Graeme Dey said: “We want to see a competitive rail freight sector playing an increasing role in Scotland’s ambition for a net zero, sustainable, inclusive economy by providing a safer, greener and more efficient way of transporting products and materials.” Mr Dey added: “The rolling programme of efficient electrification supports the key role that rail freight has to play in helping to achieve our climate change objectives and it is encouraging to see that the rail industry is also taking forward other decarbonisation measures.”
