A ‘V2’ SURVIVOR

-

ONLY one of the 184 ‘V2s’ built survives today

– No. 4771 Green Arrow, which is part of the National Collection and currently on display at the Danum Museum in Doncaster – close to where it was built at the town’s famous Works in 1936.

Green Arrow was the first built member of the class and was named after an LNER express freight service. Renumbered No. 60800 by British Railways, it was withdrawn in August 1962 and claimed for the National Collection – being restored at Doncaster Works but then stored at various locations before returning to the main line in 1973 after the breaking of BR’s steam ban (see last issue).

The loco ran in preservation until 2008 when it was withdrawn with cracked superheater tubes shortly before its boiler certificate expired. It was then put on static display at the NRM in York and Shildon, before moving to the Danum earlier this year on a three-year loan.
