‘T3’ chassis focus

-

EFFORTS to return LSWR ‘T3’ 4-4-0 No. 563 to action have focused on the loco chassis and valve gear ahead of eventual rewheeling. The cannon boxes that the valve rods go through have been machined, bored out and had bronze liners inserted, ready for reassembly of the valve gear. The brake gear has been re-ushed to remove the slack in the assembly. The Swanage Railway Trust-owned loco is under overhaul at the Flour Mill in the Forest of Dean. The frames and wheels have been filled, painted and rubbed down – work which is easier to undertake prior to rewheeling. New steel horn ties have also been temporarily fitted in place. Members of the Flour Mill team have started examining the reversing screw – there appears to be some slack in the screw. While further investigation is required, it could simply be that the slack is caused by the screw not having any weight from the valve gear keeping it tight, or it might need replacement. It is however, not expected to be hugely expensive should the part be in need of replacement. A well-wisher has kindly sponsored the replacement of the smokebox. It will be made to the original specifications, including the use of flush rivets. Anyone interested in sponsoring components, which range in value from £50 to £20,000 is asked to email 563locomotivegroup@swanagerailway. co.uk
