Tanfield’s ‘Cochrane’ returns after repaint

- THOMAS HARTLEY

THE Tanfield Railway’s stalwart Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns 0-4-0ST Sir Cecil A Cochrane (7409/1948) will be available to work the line’s popular ‘North Pole Express’ this year, thanks to a sterling effort by volunteers to get the loco fit for traffic. The former Redheugh Gas Works, Gateshead, loco has received a new tank, bottom end repairs and a full repaint, all of which was funded by grants received from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund. The loco, resplendent in the attractive and ornate RSH lined works livery, was rolled out on

October 31 when it passed its cold water exam, and this was followed by a successful steam test on November 5. It is seen outside Marley Hill shed that day.
