Last surviving Class 506 cab to be restored

-

THE Woodhead Railway Museum at Guide Bridge station, Audenshaw, Tameside, has launched a GoFundMe appeal to raise finance to transport and restore the last remaining cab of a Class 506 EMU.

These units were used on the Woodhead route between Manchester and Hadfield, now better known as the Glossop Line.

The cab end from DMBS No. M59404M is currently with Richard Benyon in the Cab Yard collection in South Wales. He says much work is needed externally and internally to restore it to the condition it was in when operational. In particular, quite a lot of welding is required, hence the need for fundraising. This is all that remains of a three-car set, once preserved at Dinting Railway Centre and the Midland Railway – Butterley, but broken up in 1995.

The cab will eventually be the focal point of the museum. For further details visit www.wrhg.co.uk, or the station at Guide Bridge on December 18 for refreshments.
