Disused GE signalbox off to Wensleydale Railway
A DISUSED Grade II Victorian signalbox from Hertford East has been found a new home on the Wensleydale Railway, Yorkshire. Built in 1888 by the Great Eastern Railway, the wood and brick structure is being dismantled and will be restored at its new location in Leyburn. The removal of the structure with a 45-lever frame, will allow the platforms at Hertford East to be extended to accommodate 10-car Greater Anglia EMUs. The Railway Heritage Trust has given the Wensleydale Railway an £80,000 grant to relocate and restore the ’box, where it will control the recently installed passing loop, and be located on the site of the original Leyburn signalbox. The project is due to be completed during 2022.
