New traffic for former South Lanarkshire coal terminal
AGGREGATES supplier Cloburn Quarry Company Ltd has purchased the former coal loading terminal next to the West Coast Main Line at Ravenstruther near Carstairs in South Lanarkshire.
It is expected to start large scale distribution of its products by rail from the site within weeks.
Cloburn’s red granite quarry, which is within a few miles of the railhead, is one of the UK’s major sources of railway ballast.
The terminal, which will be used to serve customers throughout Britain and Europe, was initially leased from Hargreaves Land to evaluate its full potential.
Improvements to its rail infrastructure have already been made and were tested using a Colas Rail Class 56 locomotive in July.
“This is a very positive deal for all concerned, securing the long-term future of the site and paving the way for a new phase of growth and development under Cloburn’s ownership,” said Cloburn managing director Stuart Clingan.
